Love Is…

I happened to be up a few nights ago flipping channels and stumbled across this fascinating trailer on OWN for a new TV series called Love is…

Love is… is a new drama series which premiered on OWN on June 19 and it was created by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil ( Creators of the TV series Girlfriends and Being Mary Jane). The show is based upon the Akil’s real-life relationship, as it  follows a modern-day power couple in Black Hollywood balancing successful careers and family during many years:

  • The show focuses on the truthfulness of two people falling in love…
  • The cast is amazing….
  • We can all see ourselves in the characters as they are three dimensional …
  • The journey of these two people falling in love will keep us watching…

The show takes us back to the 90’s and into the early 2000’s which was a time when there were some amazing Black movies being made that focused on Black Love and Relationships: Love JonesLove and BasketballThe Best Man, The Wood, and Two Can Play that Game are among the movies that stand out with quotable lines.

I did not realize how long ago its been since I have seen such amazing Black Love stories on screen which is why Black Panther was so successful, we had great acting, a great love story, and just a great movie in general. (In fact, the lessons of love that we can draw from Black Panther and being prepared for relationships are addressed in two of our blogs on February 21, and February 28: We have both a make and female perspective, Wakanda!)

I am looking forward to future episodes of this show Love is…  and I am grateful to the Akils for bringing their relationship to the screen as it is already inspiring and motivating.

I will share my perspective of what I think Love is…

  1. Love is when you take away the feeling, the passion, the romance- and you find out you still care for that person.
  1. Love is making a daily commitment to resist the needless moments of conflict that come from pointing out and responding to minor offenses
  1. Love is when your reality with someone feels better than your dreams

In other words, there is no one definition…there are many ways to define love…

So Keepers please take a  look at the trailer for the show (in fact, I hope you watch the show) and let us know what you think Love is…

I am just Keeping it 100.

Thanks for this blog Stephanie! Love is… one of my absolute favorite words. I believe that if we do everything in love there are no regrets. Also, in the words of Donald Bell in the latest 2 Piece Podcast, “Love is transcendent”.

Wow–hate that I missed the premiere last night but looking forward to the future shows…and as far as your description of what love is, wow–I’ve never heard it quite that way before but I can appreciate your definition. And for me, it’s all about commitment. I did not really understand that word of commitment and now I have a better grasp of it. These blogs are amazing!!
