Bruce’s Beach to be Returned to Original Black Owners

Home / Hump Day / Bruce’s Beach to be Returned to Original Black Owners

We hope history can be repeated! Thursday September 30, 2021 was a great day for African American Californians. CA Governor Gavin Newsom not only signed bills that force law enforcement agencies to hold their officers accountable for racial bias, misconduct, and abuse but he also signed legislation to return Bruce’s Beach to the descendants of the original owners of the resort. Willa and Charles Bruce purchased land back in 1912 along the strand in Manhattan Beach and a lodge and dance hall were opened and became a destination for Black families.
The land was seized from them in 1924 after harassment from the KKK and racist laws at the time. The Bruce’s story is the story of so many Black families who were forced off their land by racists and lost a chance at generational wealth. We hope there will be other instances of justice forthcoming…
